Jack White has basically become Mr. Vinyl in recent years, pushing the format into new territories and often in ludicrous directions.

The latest expansion to his Third Man empire involves opening a pressing plant in Detroit, which will be the city’s first new pressing plant since Archer Record Pressing opened in 1965. The plant will be located behind the label’s record store, which is set to open at 441 West Canfield on Friday.

No word on when the plant will be operational, but as The Vinyl Factory point out, it should represent a boost to labels: demand is reportedly backed up at the region’s two major manufacturers Archers and United Record Pressing.

Third Man will, naturally, be using the plant to press their own releases, but it will also be available to local acts. Speaking to Pitchfork, Third Man co-founder Ben Blackwell says: “Part of the concern in this world is that vinyl can very easily turn into an exclusionary thing… But this is going to make it easier for a little punk band to make 300 copies of a 7″.”
